Fujitsu Launches New Microcontrollers In F2MC Series

Apr 03, 2001

Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. (FMI) today introduced three new 16-bit microcontrollers that combine a controller IC and driver IC in a single package for fluorescent display control in home and vehicle audio applications.

The three new products - the MB90M407, MB90M408 and MB90MF408 (product specifications) - are the newest members of the F2MC (Fujitsu Flexible Microcontroller) Series, and were developed jointly by Fujitsu Limited and Kyushu Fujitsu Electronics, Ltd. The MCUs provide a single-package design solution for new home and vehicle audio systems that use large-screen fluorescent display controls. These new panels need to accommodate a significantly increased amount of information, and must be mounted in very small areas on home and vehicle audio systems.

To solve these design requirements, the new Fujitsu MCUs combine the controller IC and the driver IC into one package. The MCUs have high-voltage-tolerant fluorescent display control drivers for 60 output ports. The MCUs enable large-screen control of up to 896 pixels, giving system designers greater freedom in designing panel displays.

"Packaging two functions, the controller and the driver, into one microcontroller makes it smaller, simpler and very cost efficient, especially for the new, enlarged audio display panels," said Sardar Haddad, director of FMI's Embedded Processor Group. "One of the new chips, the MB90MF408, also provides internal flash memory, making it easy to modify software programs."

Fujitsu continues to enhance its F2MC lineup of microcontrollers for products such as digital AV and car audio devices, and will continue its efforts to make smaller, simpler and easier-to-design products, Haddad added.

Pricing and Availability

The new 16-bit MCUs are available now in flat surface mount packages. Pricing for 50,000-piece volume is $8.90 each for the MB90M407, $9.85 each for the MB90M408, and $19.80 each for the flash-equipped MB90MF408.
