The Valor Parts Library is the industrys largest and most detailed source of physical-model data for electronic component packages, with more than 25 million parts modeled for support of all physical-design and manufacturing-related EDA processes. Syncrons Web-based software platform, the UDN, allows multiple engineering disciplines at remote locations to communicate and collaborate about all aspects of electronics design, including part selection, ECO implementation and design verification, all in an open, secure environment.
Valor and Syncron have teamed up to provide the industrys first automated CAD-footprint generation solution, producing footprints suitable for multiple third-party PCB layout tools. Through the VPLs unique advantage of being based on data models of the package and pin configurations, CAD/CAM-ready XML data-packets from the VPL can be delivered directly into Syncrons ASP-based UDN. Initial tests confirm that the combined solution brings a compelling payback based on direct cost savings of more than 50% per footprint, with the added time-to-market benefit of cutting pre-layout library-creation time delays, which often lie on the critical time-to-market path.
Commenting on the technology partnership, Julian Coates, VP of marketing at Valor, said, Connecting the VPLs unique package-model content to the upstream CAD-library functionality of Syncron delivers a layer of value hitherto not seen in the industry. Because of the automatic inclusion of the package models in the footprint generation process, a substantial improvement in quality and speed has been achieved for the CAD librarian.
Phil Calhoun, CEO of Syncron, said, "Collaboration is key to Syncron's business strategy, in order to present best-in-class solutions across the entire product realization process. Valor has already proven the VPLs unique value in the leading global EMS companies DFM and NPI processes. Syncron is excited to be a
pioneer in taking the VPL upstream in the product-realization process into an entirely new value-added market segment."
The VPL brings new levels of accuracy and opportunities for automation to the processes of CAD library management. High-speed design and compression of electronics packaging place demands on designers that can no longer be met by standards-based footprints, which tend to be too generous on board real-estate and not built from actual design and manufacturing process-rules, leaving the librarian with the poor alternative of an error-prone manual footprint design process, using component datasheets and catalogs as source data. By contrast, the VPL brings the opportunity to automate the footprint design process based on application of rules to Web-delivered package-library content, on demand.
Valor's strategy for the VPL is to deliver a data "backbone" for all aspects of the PCB product development process-flow, from component engineering through PCB layout, NPI and down to the manufacturing machine-level on the factory floor. This partnership with Syncron marks the first application of VPL upstream of the PCB layout stage; Valor intends to continue building joint-venture solutions built on VPL content and third-party tools.
The joint Valor-Syncron footprint solution is built around a subscription-based business-model, with the VPL content charged for on a per-event basis. The first production-version of the footprint generator is available now on Syncrons UDN, which the company is formally introducing at PCB Design Conference West.
