KYZEN is pleased to announce that it will present at the LED A.R.T. Symposium, scheduled to take place Nov. 17-19, 2015 at the Crowne Plaza Midtown in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Mike Bixenman will present the paper titled “LED Failure Mechanisms That Can be Linked to Post Assembly Cleaning.”
High efficiency, low power consumption, high reliability and long life are characteristics of LED lighting. Currently, high power LEDs have found applications in outdoor and indoor illumination, automotive front lighting, back lighting and large LCD displays. LED material degradation, color variation and structure damage can be caused from electrical, thermal, chemical and mechanical stress. The reliability of high power LEDs is an important factor as this industry continues to grow and mature.
A key benefit of LED lighting is its long life potential. LED life is usually defined as lumen depreciation to a particular point, such as 70 percent of initial lumens. LED light output and useful life are highly dependent on electrical and thermal conditions that are determined by the luminaire and system design. When considering the life of an LED light, failure in any part of the electronics that make up the whole system impacts reliability. This includes the presence of ionic residue that can lead to leakage currents and lumen degradation as a result of temperature extremes, humidity, moisture incursion, voltage or current fluctuation, failure of the driver or other electrical components, damage or degradation of the encapsulate material covering the LEDS, damage to the wire bonds that connect the LEDs to the fixture, and degradation of the phosphors.
This presentation will discuss both the effects of contamination on reliability, and cleaning process designs for cleaning at the package and assembly points of manufacturing LED light products.
Dr. Mike Bixenman, CTO of KYZEN, has more than 20 years of experience in the design of electronic assembly cleaning materials and process integration. He was the chair of the 2008 IPC/SMTA Cleaning Symposium and is the current chair of the IPC Cleaning Handbook Task Group. Dr. Bixenman holds four earned degrees including a Doctorate in Business Administration.
