Legacy Electronics Receives U.S. Patent for 3-D Memory Module with Canopy-type Carriers

May 30, 2003

SAN CLEMENTE, CA - - May 20, 2003 - - Legacy Electronics announced today that their firm was granted U.S. Patent Number 6,545,868 B1 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office as of April 8, 2003. This patent covers new three-dimensional multi-chip memory modules incorporating Legacy's earlier patented Canopy printed circuit board subassembly and process technology (patent no. 6,313,998 B1, November 2001).

The inventors of this module type and holders of the patent are chief technical officer Kenneth J. Kledzik and president Jason C. Engle, both of San Clemente, California.

"This new patent further protects our intellectual property in this area of memory module design," said Engle. "To designers," continued Engle, "it means a greater variety of mixed technologies can now be used with Canopy, a three-dimensional process that permits a variety of space-limited memory design applications. Canopy was created in 2001 in part to help reduce thermal failures associated with stacked-chip technologies."

"The ever increasing demand for large RAM (random access memory) combined with demand for increasingly compact computer products," says Ken Kledzik, "makes this canopy-type module a viable option. Most 3-D chip-stacking alternatives require larger, more complex non-standard packaging methods. With these alternative Canopy modules, circuit density is increased using standard DIMM packaging."

About Legacy Electronics

Founded in 1993 and located among the new high-technology companies of South Orange County, California, Legacy Electronics is an ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturer, designer and tester of high-speed, high-density memory modules, printed circuit boards, and other computer products. Their new 41,000-square-foot contract manufacturing and headquarters facility is located in the Rancho San Clemente Business Park, and accommodates over $5 million in surface-mount technology (SMT) and automated test (ATE) equipment.

The customer response to Canopy products and services since 2001 has allowed Legacy to increase personnel numbers by 30% and add an additional manufacturing shift to meet demand.
