Tyco Electronics Releases First Connector For 10-Gigabit Transceivers

Mar 27, 2001

Tyco Electronics today announced the release of the AMP PT70 connector, a 70-pin board-mounted card edge connector that will connect the new 10-Gigabit Ethernet pluggable fiber optic transceivers to the printed circuit board. The AMP connector's electrical input/output interface is based on XAUI (10G Attachment Unit Interface) protocols. The PT70 is the latest in the PT (Pluggable Transceiver) Connector Series. AMP earlier released the PT20, the connector used for the Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver.

The new connector was introduced at the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC 2001) in Anaheim, CA, and generated a great deal of activity from the nearly 40,000 attendees. "This connector, and 10-Gigabit pluggable transceivers, address our customers' continual need for speed and flexibility," commented Ed Gorman, Industry Manager, Communications Business Unit, at Tyco Electronics.

The AMP PT70 connector conforms to the multi-source agreement (MSA) developed specifically for the proposed IEEE 10-Gigabit Ethernet interoperability standard, which was recently announced by Agilent Technologies and Agere Systems. The MSA specifies they will be pluggable devices, connecting to a host circuit board in the "Z" plane, through a board-mounted card edge connector. The optical interface will be a standard SC duplex fiber optic connector. It defines the form factor, size, connector type and electrical pin-outs for all transceivers using this standard. The MSA provides for the capability for any transceivers developed using the current, proposed IEEE 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard, including 850 nm serial, 1310 nm serial, 1310 nm WWDM and 1550 nm serial transceiver applications. This transceiver design addresses the major challenges associated with 10 gigabit solutions, such as RFI issues, heat dissipation, manufacturability, pin assignments within the connector, and flexibility for other technologies.

The technology used in the connector design can accommodate a 10 Gigabit Ethernet serial link, which enables a migration path to higher speeds.

AMP PT70 part number 1367337-1 prototypes are available for delivery in 4-6 weeks, with pricing under $11.00 in volume. For additional product information on Tyco Electronics interconnection products, visit http://www.amp.com/communications or call 800-522-6752.
