SIPLACE Alternative Tracks More precision and flexibility on the SMT line

Jul 24, 2012

With Alternative Tracks, the SIPLACE team has made the setup process in electronics manufacturing even more flexible. Thanks to the new function, components can now be installed in multiple tracks of the component cart. When the first feeder runs empty, the system automatically switches to an alternate, which can be set up on any track of the component cart. The new function was designed for applications where splicing should be avoided for technical reasons or where traceability must be ensured down to the component level. Combining Alternative Tracks with the well-known Alternative Components function makes the line even more flexible.  If one component reel runs out, the job can continue running non-stop with predefined alternative components. These can now be supplied on a different width-feeder in any position on the same component cart.

The classic processing of splicing a tape to an existing reel when it is about to run empty carries significant risks for traceability and very demanding applications. With its Alternative Tracks function, SIPLACE now offers new options for such applications. When a track has run empty, the system automatically switches to a feeder and components on an alternative track. The respective feeders and components can be set up on the same component cart. Operators can set up alternative tracks in advance as part of the product setup or immediately before the primary track is about to run empty. In either case, the SIPLACE placement machine will switch to the alternative track automatically and with no production interruption.

The new functions can also be combined with the older "Alternative Components" function, i.e. the new reel doesn't have to be identical to the reel that is about to run out and can even be supplied on a different-size feeder.

Setup optimization and Random Setup tracking
Since random setups tend to increase cycle times, the SIPLACE software includes a function that lets you reorganize the optimized setup more easily. At the push of a button you can identify feeders that are not positioned optimally and move them to more efficient locations.

"With Alternative Tracks we offer another improvement in setup flexibility. The result: simplified setup processes that are faster and let you run your line as effectively and with as few interruptions as possible. The combination of all these functions demonstrates the superiority of our software. Everything is based on the idea that fast and error-tolerant setups are the key to more efficiency and consequently to the financial success of our customers," explains Hubert Egger, product marketing manager on the SIPLACE team.

Alternative tracks can be set up by operators in advance as part of the product setup or immediately before the primary track is about to run empty.
