After 27 years of development, Assembly Technology Expo (ATE) has evolved into the most famous exposition in industrial assembly technology.

After 27 years of development, Assembly Technology Expo (ATE) has evolved into the most famous exposition in industrial assembly technology.

First launched in the 1980s, machine vision (MV), the application of computer vision to industry and manufacturing, has been improving its functions and features as industry automation has spread. As the overall level of industrialization rises, MV products that serve as the “eyes” of automation equipment are being applied more widely for great improvement in production flexibility and automation levels. This is what allows the MV industry to sustain such rapid growth.

From August 31 to September 2, ATE China 2010 will be held at the Shenzhen Exhibition Center and MV, a very popular field right now, will be the focus of the exhibition. Josephine Lee, Vice President of Reed Exhibitions East China, one of the organizers of the event, believes that exhibitors of far higher quality from the MV sector will be on-site in greater number than last year. Manufacturers like Optirom, OGP, Microscan, Dongguan Media Speed, Dongguan OPT, Shenzhen Sunshine Vision, Shenzhen Servo Dynamics and Shanghai Botrong will showcase their latest MV products and technologies.

China: The Fastest Growing Market in the World

According to forecasts by the German-based company Allied Vision Technologies (AVT), the Chinese MV market will grow rapidly in the coming years. Frank Grube, President of AVT, stated that improvement of product quality in the Chinese market and rising labor costs that drive the move towards automated processes, is causing the spread of MV to gain momentum is China.

In the 21st century, taking advantage of China’s high-speed economic development and benefiting from the widespread application of MV technologies in industry, the Chinese MV market is becoming an important target market for international MV manufacturers, alongside that of North America, Europe and Japan.

Recent statistics show that China now boasts more than 150 international MV brands. Additionally, there are nearly 100 Chinese brands, over 300 agents and more than 120 professional system integrators in the MV segment. These figures illustrate the rapid growth of MV in China and the huge potential of this vigorous market as it matures. The industry covers the whole MV chain, including semiconductors, electronics, automotive and packaging & printing, as well as other elements of the industry chain, such as light sources, industrial cameras, industrial lenses, image capture cards and smart cameras.

According to Josephine Lee, it was previously thought within the electronics manufacturing industry that for MV to replace manual inspection, PC systems had to undergo expensive upgrades (or be replaced altogether). Now, however, the accepted wisdom is that simply installing a low-cost smart camera system on the production line will solve most production problems. This means greater adoption of the lower-system-cost and shorter-integration-time smart camera system. The machine vision OEM market is increasingly applied to domestic device manufacturing to improve quality. Ms. Lee points out that, unlike a few years ago, MV systems are sure to now be very popular at ATE China 2010.

The event also will be supported by the Chinese Image and Graphics Society. Members of the society can experience the latest technical applications and development trends on-site.

Applications Are Maturing

In the electronics manufacturing industry, with the miniaturization of electronics, the wide application of new components and the increasing complexity of production, MV technology is becoming an important way of ensuring quality and efficiency on the production line. Its functions are widely appreciated. Accordingly, many MV solutions are broadly promoted and applied in China.

Josephine Lee stated that a recent survey by Reed Exhibitions, the organizers of ATE China 2010, showed that an increasing number of manufacturers are adopting MV systems in their production lines and inspection processes. MV applications will be comprehensively showcased in the exhibition space. Dongguan Media Speed will display their linear robots and desktop spot welding robots. Shanghai Botrong Electric will display different BOA vision systems. Shenzhen Servo Dynamics makes the Dalsa IPD, a vision system designed for hostile environments on the production line. Other manufacturers will display various application solutions. All of these will help visitors to realize that combining assembly and packaging technology, together with the rising prevalence of MV technology can ensure excellent motion control performance in processing devices and provide higher control accuracy.

Experts indicate that as the number of MV products increases and related technology improves, domestic MV applications are becoming higher end. Along with the introduction of MV, automation will develop more rapidly and become smarter. Additionally, as a result of diversified customer demands and different degrees of requirements, personalized solutions and services are increasingly important to competitiveness. This is to say that replacing standard products with customized products is an emerging trend for the future development of MV.

Additionally, the application of MV will encourage manufacturers to make automated technologies more intelligent. Josephine Lee stated that as the industry internalizes and specializes, ATE China 2010 will be the ideal platform for participants in the show to learn about and purchase machine vision products and systems. At the expo, a comprehensive range of new technologies, products and devices will be on display, under one roof. Members of the electronics manufacturing industry also will be able to gather to exchange information and network face-to-face.
