SEMA to Hold Manufacturing Technology, PV Module Trouble Shooting and Standards Training Course

Oct 05, 2011

The Solar Engineering & Manufacturing Association (SEMA) announces the agenda for the SEMA Training Course, scheduled to take place Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Celestica’s facility in Toronto, Canada. The training course will consist of two parts.

Part One will provide an outline of  manufacturing technology and troubleshooting photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing, and will be instructed by Ian Aeby, Director of Quality and Reliability at Emcore Solar Power. The following topics will be discussed during Part One:

  • Types of PV modules
  • Overview of manufacturing steps for crystalline silicon modules
  • How PV modules work
  • Potential module reliability problems in the field and associated root cause problems in module manufacturing
  • Methods to ensure module reliability

Ian has conducted work in PV for many years including work under contract to the US Energy Research and Development Agency (now the Department of Energy). He has been a member of the technical staff and management for more than 12 years at Emcore, Corp., a vertically integrated manufacturer of solar cells, modules and systems for space flight and utility scale solar power production. He holds a BSEE Degree from the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque and an MSEE from the University of California-Santa Barbara.

Part Two will consist of a standards overview instructed by Allen Zielnik of Atlas. Zielnik will discuss the importance of standards in general as well as the organizations involved in developing PV standards, with a focus on UL1703 and IEC 61215 standards. Part Two of the session will discuss:

  • PV performance
  • PV reliability and durability
  • PV safety
  • Fire protection
  • Electrical shock hazard
  • PV qualification

Zielnik is the Senior Consultant in Weathering Science for the Solar Energy Competence Center at Atlas, and previously headed the Polymer Evaluations Products Division. He has more than 20 years of experience in weathering technology and technical standards development.

The cost for the training course is $450 for SEMA members and $535 for non-SEMA members, with the non-SEMA member cost covering the cost of a one year individual SEMA membership.
