NEC Electronics Inc. was honored with EEMBC's (EDN Embedded Processor Benchmark Consortium) first annual "Most Published" Award. Nicknamed the "Gutsy Award," the honor is given to the EEMBC member. That certified and published the greatest number of EEMBC benchmarking scores during the year. EEMBC's first release of benchmark results on April 11, 2000,* contained scores for three of NEC's products, representing more published scores than for any other EEMBC member.
"Because the publication of benchmark scores is voluntary, NEC epitomizes what we envision for our Gutsy Award - an openness and willingness to reveal their true processor performance," said Markus Levy, president and chief executive of EEMBC. "The published results enable designers to make processor comparisons with officially certified benchmark scores translating to time and cost savings."
EEMBC benchmarks were completed for NEC's 250 MHz Vr5000(TM) and 167 MHz Vr5432(TM) processors and its 143 MHz V832(TM) microcontroller in the following five application areas: automotive/industrial, consumer, networking, office automation and telecommunications. The EEMBC benchmark scores specify more than 40 different benchmarks, each representing a different workload and stressing a different processor capability. NEC has also submitted its Vr4122(TM) and V850E(TM) devices to EEMBC for benchmarking.
"We are pleased to be recognized for our commitment to the EEMBC initiative and to our customers," said David Lamar, EEMBC board member and senior marketing manager for NEC Electronics. "We clearly recognize the importance of standardized benchmarks for embedded applications as a valuable tool to help our customers make design decisions based on real-world performance data. Moving forward, NEC Electronics will continue to submit products for benchmarking in an effort to provide engineers with the knowledge required to select the ideal processors for their designs."
Karl Auker, assistant general manager of the Vr Series(TM) Microprocessor Strategic Business Unit, NEC Electronics, added, "Not only can standardized benchmarks provide customers with unbiased performance data, and at NEC we're using EEMBC benchmarks to help refine future products and to fine-tune processor performance for critical applications."
