New Cornell Dubilier Electronics Capacitor Series is rated at 6,000 hours; new Patented Design Safely Expands Mounting Options
NORTHVALE, New Jersey, USA – New Yorker Electronics has announced the availability of the new Cornell Dubilier (CDE) patented PCD Series of high current, AC harmonic filter capacitors with dual built-in failsafe protection systems, one at each end.
Similar capacitors in this category have one open-circuit pressure device located under the top cover that requires the capacitor to be mounted from its bottom stud. The new PCD series combines a self-healing metallized polypropylene capacitor and a mechanical pressure interrupter, allowing it to operate while mounted to either a busbar or bottom stud.
With the new bottom pressure device, fixed terminals allow for the activation of bottom safety devices (with the proper bottom clearance provided). When activated, the bottom pressure device expands outward like a bellows. The PCD is an upgrade to European AC power film capacitors that typically have only a downward expanding interruption mechanism. The dual pressure interrupter of the PCD series gives the user maximum flexibility in mounting when failsafe operation is of primary importance.
While these failsafe devices are incorporated to prevent case rupture at end-of-life, PCD series capacitors are designed with a service life of over 60,000 hours at rated voltage and temperature. They are also rated at 10,000 AFC. These new CDE film capacitors are designed to meet the demands of AC filter applications rich in system total harmonic distortion (THD).
The PCD series is offered with capacitance ratings ranging from 20μF to 125μF at voltage ratings from 240Vac to 600Vac 50/60Hz. Case diameters vary from 63.5 to up to 116mm. Custom capacitance and voltage ratings, sizes, and performance characteristics are also available. Specific application conditions, especially harmonic content profiles, are needed to properly size the capacitors for peak performance. Standard terminations are M6x1 threaded, tin-plated brass. Other termination types and sizes are available. It is offered in five different base size options from 2.5in to 4.5in.
The new CDE capacitor has a temperature range of -40°C to +70°C and a capacitance tolerance of ±5% standard, with ±10%, ±6 and ±3% available through New Yorker Electronics. Its service life objective is 60,000hrs with a 94% survival rate. Additionally, PCD capacitors have robust construction allowing their use in high humidity environments, with case cover materials consist of extruded aluminum and steel available.
The series has been tested at Temperature-Humidity-Bias for 1000hrs at 85°C/85% RH, which places it in the highest climatic category of Class III-B, per IEC 60384, and it is UL 810 Fail Safe rated. Applications include UPS, AC-tuned filters, AC input filtering, line conditioning, noise suppression, variable-speed drives and wind turbine motoring.
