Inovar Expands Capabilities with New X-Ray Fluorescence System

Dec 23, 2008

LOGAN, UTAH Inovar, an inthinc company and a leading contract electronics manufacturer (CEM) dedicated to providing flexible solutions to OEMs in the fastest growing segments of the electronic industry, announces that it has expanded its capabilities with the acquisition of a new Fischer Technologies FISCHERSCOPE X-RAY XDAL.

This system enables Inovar to perform quantitative analysis on solid, powder or paste-like materials to determine elemental composition and thickness. This device is equipped with a 10 x 9 x 5.6" programmable XYZ stage to locate a sample under the 0.1 mm beam collimator. A high-resolution CCD solid-state color camera with auto-focus is integrated to ensure that the beam is hitting the precise location that requires analysis.

XRF technology is becoming more popular because it provides a method to perform a verification of a component composition and compliance to the EU's RoHS directive. This tool also is invaluable in cracking down on counterfeit components, a steadily growing problem within the circuit assembly industry.

The device functions by emitting a beam of controlled radiation from a micro-focus X-ray tube through an adjustable collimator into the sample. The sample will then fluoresce that energy for the system to detect and provide a precise elemental analysis of the top 24 substances found within. The device is shielded and has numerous redundant safety interlocks to eliminate any risk of radiation exposure to employees operating the device.

After reviewing a number of different makes and models of XRF technology, we selected the XDAL. We felt that its controlled analysis and spotless safety record would meet the current and future needs of our partners and ensure safety of our employees, said Don McFarland, Inovar's Compliance Manager, who was tasked with leading the analysis.

XRF is one more tool that is added to the Inovar arsenal to ensure that our customers are receiving the absolute best service from a premier EMS provider, said Tom Carlin, Inovar's President.

novar, an inthinc company,is a premier EMS company, in mid-volume THA and SMT assembly, and also provides a full range of electronics manufacturing services. The company's areas of value-added service include materials procurement, printed circuit assembly, test and system build. This complete offering of services enables customers to receive the highest quality at reduced costs. For more information, visit http://www.inovar-inc.com.
