COURSE DESCRIPTION

IPC/WHMA-A-620 is the industry standard for cable and wire harness fabrication and installation. The course aims to teach personnel how to verify the quality of work that is being done to ensure compliance and proper inspection. The objective of the course is to teach correct application of the standard, which defines acceptability criteria for crimped, mechanically secured and soldered interconnection and the corresponding lacing/restraining criteria associated with cable and harness assemblies.

This IS NOT a stand-alone course.  It must be completed in conjunction with the IPC/WHMA-A-620 base class.  Not available for CSE level certification.

CERTIFIED IPC SPECIALIST (CIS) CERTIFICATION DETAILS

WHAT A CIS RECEIVES

  • Hands-on cable kit

Certification Requirements: Pass practical cable-building exams at 80% or better
Prerequisite: IPC/WHMA-A-620 base certification within previous 90 days & basic cable-building skills
Class Length: 1 – 1.5 days, skill level dependent
Certification Length: 24 months, tied to IPC/WHMA-A-620 base certification

COURSE STRUCTURE

Students will:

  • Prepare proper preparation of wires and terminations prior to assembly
  • Determine the correct wire size for the connector or termination being utilized
  • Inspect criteria for assembled crimps, splices, or terminations
  • Correctly prepare wires, terminations, and crimps prior to assembly.
  • Ensure assembly of various crimp, solder splices, and terminations
  • Inspect various crimp, solder splices, and terminations.
    • How to identify acceptable from unacceptable 
    • Explain the different applicable standards
  • Have knowledge of the proper tools and materials needed for successful assembly of various crimps, splices, and terminations.
