SMT Engineer

Title : Manufacturing Engineer / Engineering Technician

Reports To : Operations Manager / President

This is the principal Manufacturing Engineering / Technician position for BESTProto, Inc.  It has primary responsibility for all technical and manufacturing issues related to a prototype / pilot production contract electronics manufacturing facility.  Position is responsible for all aspects of manufacturing customer product from the quotation through the delivery phases.  Successful candidate will be proficient in all technical skills related to printed circuit board assembly in a high-mix / low volume (prototype) manufacturing environment.  Computer skills are particularly important with an emphasis placed on file formats and the ability to recognize and convert from one format to another (i.e., MS Excel to text, etc.). 

Primary Responsibilities:

• Evaluation of customer BOM and other documentation for manufacturability.
• Import and re-formatting of customer data for in-house use.
• Creation of internal BOMs and assembly instructions / documentation.
• Conversion of customer data.
• Specification and ordering of stencils and other production tooling.
• Creation of machine placement programs. (Mydata experience a plus)
• Creation of new parts / packages for placement library
• Profiling of reflow oven.
• Review and verification of customer supplied kits.
• Primary technical contact for customer.
• Participate in equipment specification and selection.
• Investigation and resolution of manufacturing problems.
• Provide manufacturability feedback to customer on prototype runs.
• Specify and purchase electronic components per customer requirements
• Maintain all manufacturing equipment  - preventative and troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with tooling design and fabrication a plus.

General Skills Required:

• Well versed in PCB assembly technology
• Excellent computer skills – particularly MS Excel, familiarity with conversion to/from text, etc.
• Familiar with AutoCAD or equivalent
• Knowledge of RoHS requirements and impact on manufacturing requirements
• Familiar with gerber files and related information (PCB fabrication)
• Familiar with JEDEC and IPC standards
• Excellent organizational and problem solving skills a must
• Ability to adapt to a changing production schedules and priorities

Educational / Experience Requirements:

• B.S. or A.S. in technical discipline
• 3-5 years related experience in a low-volume / high-mix electronics manufacturing environment
• IPC and/or other technical certifications a plus.
