I agree that Dage makes some excellent 3D (CAT) systems, but in our experience a high-resolution 2D system with tilt capability is usually better-suited for inspection of solder joints. Glenn Robertson Process Sciences

I would recommend looking at SAKI/MacroScience. http://www.xraytechnology.eu/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=34&Itemid=42 I have seen the images created by MSX3000 from MacroScience which is now under SAKI and can tell you with certainty

It sounds like 3D imaging is much better at fault detection for partially visible leads like SOJ packages. Can any of the 2D systems actually do a solderjoint inspection on the outer rows of BGAs or is the angle too acute to accurately look at these.
