It does looks like a arbor press. It's a customized one to be exact, pins there to fits the fixture.

Hello Sally, The force required for press fit connectors will vary depending on the connector type. The force will also very significantly from one supplier to another for the same connector. To give you an example; for a .100" DIN 41612 connector

Depending on the connector you should be able to use a standard cheap arbor press with some cheap home-made tooling. Standard arbor presses typically have a rotating disc with cut-outs, remove this and put a decent quality stainless steel block in it

I'm out here on the leftcoast. Actually, our method for removal is: break down the sides, pull each pin individually. It's tedious and time consuming, but it can be accomplished with little risk of damaging the board. Customers are curious, however.

I assume the connector is like one used in PC104 that allows mating of boards together by inserting the pins extending from the connector on one board into the female portion of the connector on a second board. Who ever accepted this job is dopey.

We agree. We consider mounting holes and press fgit socket pads to be "critical contact areas." Consider taking steps to prevent the production of such solder splats on your gold to help elimate gold rework. We discussed this previously here on SMTn
