Pad Cratering

Technical Library | 2020-05-08 18:22:31.0

A customer contacted the Helpline to perform analysis on a lead-free assembly which exhibited intermittent functionality. The lead-free assembly exhibiting intermittent functionality when pressure was applied to the ball grid array (BGA) packages. Industrial adaptation of a Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliant solder standard has created a new host of failure modes observed in lead-free assemblies. Pad cratering occurs when fractures propagate along the epoxy resin layer on the underside of the BGA connecting pads. While originating from process, design, and end use conditions, it is the combination of a rigid lead-free solder with inflexible printed circuit board (PCB) laminates that has advanced the prevalence of this condition. Pad cratering is simply the result of mechanical stress exceeding material limitations.

DOE for Process Validation Involving Numerous Assembly Materials and Test Methods.

Selecting products that have been qualified by industry standards for use in printed circuit board assembly processes is an accepted best practice. That products which have been qualified, when used in combinations not specifically qualified, may have resultant properties detrimental to assembly function though, is often not adequately understood. Printed circuit boards, solder masks, soldering materials (flux, paste, cored wire, rework flux, paste flux, etc.), adhesives, and inks, when qualified per industry standards, are qualified using very specific test methods which may not adequately mimic the assembly process ultimately used.

Thick Film Polymer Resistors Embedded in Printed Circuit Boards

Technical Library | 2010-04-15 20:42:44.0

The high level of current interest in embedded passives in printed circuit boards is driven by the tremendous pressure to pack more circuitry into smaller spaces. However, adoption has been limited due to design, prototyping and infrastructure issues, as well as the stability and tolerances necessary for widespread replacement of discretes. The focus of this work has been to develop a polymer thick film resistor technology to incorporate reliable organic resistors inside printed wiring boards using standard PWB processing.

IPC-CC-830B Versus the 'Real World'

Technical Library | 2016-09-22 17:52:59.0

Conformal Coatings are often used to increase the reliability of electronic assemblies operating in harsh or corrosive environments where the product would otherwise fail prematurely. Conformal coatings are often qualified to international standards, intended to enable users to better differentiate between suitable conformal coating chemistries, but always on a flat test coupon, which is not representative of real world use conditions. In order to better correlate international standards with real world-use conditions, three-dimensional Surface Insulation Resistance (SIR) test boards have been manufactured with dummy components representative of those commonly used on printed circuit assemblies...

Conformal Coating Thickness Measurement

Technical Library | 2013-10-13 10:54:13.0

The measurement of the conformal coating thickness on a printed circuit board (PCB) to ensure internal and international standards are met is now a critical factor in conformal coating process control. There are several methods for measurement of conformal coating thickness and they fall into two categories. These categories are wet film measurements applied during coating application and dry film measurements made after the coating is dried enough not to damage the coating.

High Performance Multilayer PCBs Design and Manufacturability

Technical Library | 2013-10-31 17:36:41.0

Multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs) that utilize high performance materials are inherently far more challenging for a fabricator to build, due to significant material property differences over standard epoxy glass FR4. These unique material characteristics often require higher processing temperatures, special surface treatments (to aid in hole and surface plating), they possess different expansion properties, making layer-to-layer registration more difficult to control, and require many other unique considerations.

ACHIEVING A SUCCESSFUL ENIG FINISHED PCB UNDER REVISION A OF IPC 4552 MACDERMID ENTHONE

Technical Library | 2023-01-06 16:09:03.0

The 4-14 IPC Standards Committee recently created a revision to the IPC4552 specification for Electroless Nickel/Immersion Gold (ENIG) finished Printed Circuit Boards (PCB). Revision A brings a more comprehensive evaluation of metal layer thicknesses measurement, composition and introduces, for the first time, a quality aspect for nickel corrosion which has been historically connected to a defect called black line nickel or black pad.

Thermal Reliability of Laser Ablated Microvias and Standard Through-Hole Technologies as a Function of Materials and Processing

Technical Library | 2021-12-21 23:15:44.0

High Density Interconnect (HDI) technologies are being used widely in Asia and Europe in consumer electronics for portable wireless communication and computing, digital imaging, and chip packaging. Although North America lags behind in developing process capability for this technology, HDI will become a significant business segment for North America. For this to happen, the printed circuit board shops will have to become process capable in fabricating fine lines and spaces, and also be capable in forming and plating microvias.

Unlocking The Mystery of Aperture Architecture for Fine Line Printing

Technical Library | 2018-06-13 11:42:00.0

The art of screen printing solder paste for the surface mount community has been discussed and presented for several decades. However, the impending introduction of passive Metric 0201 devices has reopened the need to re-evaluate the printing process and the influence of stencil architecture. The impact of introducing apertures with architectural dimensions’ sub 150um whilst accommodating the requirements of the standard suite of surface mount connectors, passives and integrated circuits will require a greater knowledge of the solder paste printing process. The dilemma of including the next generation of surface mount devices into this new heterogeneous environment will create area ratio challenges that fall below todays 0.5 threshold. Within this paper the issues of printing challenging area ratio and their associated aspect ratio will be investigated. The findings will be considered against the next generation of surface mount devices.

Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Technology for Electrochemical Sensors and Sensing Platforms

Technical Library | 2021-02-17 22:13:39.0

The development of various biosensors has revolutionized the healthcare industry by providing rapid and reliable detection capability. Printed circuit board (PCB) technology has a well-established industry widely available around the world. In addition to electronics, this technology has been utilized to fabricate electrical parts, including electrodes for different biological and chemical sensors. High reproducibility achieved through long-lasting standard processes and low-cost resulting from an abundance of competitive manufacturing services makes this fabrication method a prime candidate for patterning electrodes and electrical parts of biosensors. The adoption of this approach in the fabrication of sensing platforms facilitates the integration of electronics and microfluidics with biosensors. In this review paper, the underlying principles and advances of printed board circuit technology are discussed. In addition, an overview of recent advancements in the development of PCB-based biosensors is provided. Finally, the challenges and outlook of PCB-based sensors are elaborated. doi:10.3390/bios10110159
