5 Axis Fluid Dispensing

Technical Library | 2015-07-31 16:28:16.0

Technology is in constant change and circuit assembly is no different. It is becoming more and more advanced as needs change and demands for more capabilities increase. In order to meet these demands, equipment manufacturers are integrating the latest innovations and tools to serve the industry. The need to better protect printed circuit assemblies from harsh environments using automated selective conformal coating is becoming a must. 5 axis fluid dispensing allows conformal coating to be applied to printed circuit assemblies like never before.

Coatings and Pottings: A Critical Update

Technical Library | 2021-08-11 01:00:37.0

Conformal coatings and potting materials continue to create issues for the electronics industry. This webinar will dig deeper into the failure modes of these materials, specifically issues with Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE), delamination, cracking, de-wetting, pinholes/bubbles and orange peel issues with conformal coatings and what mitigation techniques are available. Similarly, this webinar will look at the failure modes of potting materials, (e.g Glass Transition Temperature (Tg), PCB warpage, the effects of improper curing and potential methods for correcting these situations.

Conformal Coating - Sealing PCBs

Technical Library | 2019-05-01 15:19:19.0

"Sealing" in dispensing and potting technology describes a process in which sensitive electronics surfaces are coated with a very thin layer of casting resin or protective varnish. It serves to protect against environmental influences and corrosion, resulting in a longer service life and operational reliability of the components. To ensure that the material is distributed homogeneously across the surface, this well-known "conformal coating" process is employed using low-viscosity casting resins.

Guide to Light-Cure Conformal Coating

Technical Library | 2017-11-30 10:29:29.0

Each year the electronics industry is faced with new product designs that call for smaller printed circuit boards (PCBs) to function in more aggressive and rigorous service environments. As demands change, conformal coating is becoming increasingly adopted to ensure PCB reliability in environments where moisture, condensation, dust, dirt, salts, chemicals, abrasion, thermal shock, mechanical shock, and other factors can all affect circuit performance. This guide reviews the benefits of using light-cure conformal coatings as well as cost justification, typical processing guidelines and best practices, product selection criteria, data, and industry specifications.

Measuring Conformal Coating Thickness

Technical Library | 2015-07-21 13:50:37.0

Achieving an even coat at the right desired thickness is a major challenge when it comes to applying conformal coating to a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Applying a coating too thin will ultimately render the electronic assembly vulnerable to potential environmental risks therefore defeating the purpose of the coating. Apply the coat too thick, and it could leave the electronic specific components non-functional therefore destroying the electronic assembly entirely. Coating thickness must meet quality specifications. Measurements for coating thickness may be taken while film is dry or wet. Once measurements are recorded, thickness is compared to quality specifications and fluid dispensing automation machinery is calibrated as necessary. There are a handful of methods for measuring conformal coating thickness that are commonly used in the Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) and Original Electronic Manufacturer (OEM) industries. A few commonly used methods for checking conformal coating thickness include:

Printed Circuit Board Quality: Copper Wrap

Technical Library | 2021-07-20 20:12:20.0

Motivation: High reject rates for PCBs due to specification non-conformances Multiple rebuilds causing impactful schedule delays + Copper Wrap + Wicking + Etchback + Annular Ring Are rejected boards reliable? What are PCB quality requirements for? + Reliability: fewer cycles-to-failure? + Manufacturability: define threshold of modern manufacturing capability?

Conformal Surface Plasmons Propagating on Ultrathin and Flexible Films

Technical Library | 2013-09-05 17:44:14.0

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are localized surface electromagnetic waves that propagate along the interface between a metal and a dielectric. Owing to their inherent subwavelength confinement, SPPs have a strong potential to become building blocks of a type of photonic circuitry built up on 2D metal surfaces; however, SPPs are difficult to control on curved surfaces conformably and flexibly to produce advanced functional devices. Here we propose the concept of conformal surface plasmons (CSPs), surface plasmon waves that can propagate on ultrathin and flexible films to long distances in a wide broadband range from microwave to mid-infrared frequencies.

Conforming To a Higher Standard of Reliability

Technical Library | 2009-10-22 02:38:13.0

An electronic product's reliability has the potential to make or break its manufacturer and can be life-threatening in many safety critical applications. Conformal coatings have long been used to protect electronic assemblies from their operating environment but can vary hugely in their protective performance. It is the objective of this article to explain in detail why it is important to qualify coating products to the relevant standards and how different coating types affect performance.

Setting Up a Conformal Coating Facility

Technical Library | 2013-11-06 06:39:05.0

The set up of a turnkey conformal coating production line or facility, whether it is a batch or inline process, has many similar characteristics. Whether the coating application is based around a high volume selective coating robot, a batch dip coating system or a spray booth, the process requirements tend to be the same. This bulletin reviews the potential needs of the facility, including the process controls, environmental needs and health and safety issues and provides some starting points for a new facility.

Printed circuit boards are the base of electronic products in a variety of consumer and industrial applications. New PCBs always perform well. However, their performance will deteriorate with time due to exposure to different environmental conditions like condensation, moisture, contamination of the iconic material on the surface, dust and dirt, mildew, alpha particles, etc. To avoid these problems, PCBs are protected with conformal coatings. Let’s see how this is done, and how they protect PCB components.
