Hi Gabriele Has the snow melted up there, yet? No, SMTA membership, while good in its own right, is not a prerequiste to ordering documents from EMPF. Select "order technical publications" here: http://www.empf.org/html/empfset.htm

Hi Excellent. You are right that many areas due to ESD or cleanliness requirements would not be appropriate for Walkmans, personal CD players and such. YiE, MA/NY DDave

We have considered running a spare board with each job as a possible solution, however due to the cost of the assembly, this would not be preferred.

we will be using water soluble solder paste. cleaning will be for smt assemblies only. waste water will be treated prior to disposal. as far as testing for cleanliness, any suggestions or recommendations on test equipment would be greatly appreciated

The only thing I would add to Chunks comments are components like buzzers, switches etc. that cannot get wet. For whatever it is worth, ionographs, omegameters and the like use the same basic alcohol/water mix for cleanliness testing. Russ

Won't there be ESD & inspection problems with Martins dispensed all over the board? we only have 1 Martin here and he would fail an ESD test and a cleanliness test. Also he's considerably bigger than any board we make.

An interesting article about ROSE testing... http://www.circuitnet.com/articles/article_13068.shtml Discusses some serious cleanliness issues that Omegameter type technology is not capable of detecting

One step is to examine the cleanliness on and around the failing component. There could be an ionic contaminant causing the shorts. Regards, Sara Gorcos www.residues.com
