We are using these Cover tape extenders https://smtsupplies.com/products/cover-tape-extenders-8-12mm-yellow-500-per-box

The problem we have is that we have on 8mm feeders is that these leaders are harder plastic, and we have to put fishing weights on basically every one until the leader gets past the pull gear.

Another problem we have, somewhat unrelated to the extenders, is that we have to extend almost any plastic carrier tape and weight it, otherwise it bunches up against the end.

Is there something to learn here, or is this just par for the non reel course?

Use off cuts from the reels & just buy splices.

It's how i've done prototype jobs before switching away from cut tape & part reels etc.

Although if this is a forever ending cycle it can be very painful.

I was just at a trade show Tuesday. I was impressed by smartsplice. Quick and easy, he also sells empty feeder you can cut off for a starter for partial reels. https://smartsplice.com/?v=7516fd43adaa

I have tried cover tape extenders from a multitude of sources and they all seem to be made of the same plastic. I think your best solution might be to splice on carrier tape extenders instead, these can come with conventional cover tape already fitted.

As other posters have done I do keep the ends of full reels mostly to use as "trailer" as on our Essemtec feeders you can get in an awful mess if the last component is at the very end of the tape.

Try using the splice tape without the plastic extension. Use old tape to make the splice. This is much cheaper as well.

For the plastic tapes, you have to bend the front a bit during setup and also after running a few boards, stop the machine and check all the plastic feeders to check nothing is bunched up. If any fix it rather than machine stops and you waste parts

Also 70$ for tape extenders? Get half price from me. Lol
