We've been running a trusty MPM UP2000 printer for a few years now but the 30 year old technology is starting to struggle a bit. It didn't come with snuggers and the vacuum hold down just doesn't cut it for some of the finer pitch stuff we're now doing.

So I'm looking at replacement secondhand options less than 8 years old.

We have Yamaha placers so I was originally thinking of a YCP-10, but it's actually quite a deep machine which will make access trickier in our installation location. I'm surprised to learn that the UP2000 is actually a relatively compact machine!

I was suggested to go for a DEK as they have been very popular (especially in Asia), which means there is plenty of spares and support available. The NeoHorizon is a little more compact that the previous model, so could be a good option.

Is there anything else I should be looking at?

DEK is quite popular and getten replacement parts is easy in Asia. At this time we have EKRA which is really good for operators (I think, EKRA have the best GUI) and the mechanical design is much simplier as DEK designed. If I were you I will check some of X4-X5-Serio EKRAs too - especially Professional versions.

You can have a try on GKG brand, very popular in China, cheaper and stable

I can't speak for the others, but we have a pair of DEK's. They do a good job for us. The tech that came out to do a PM for us (we got them both second hand and wanted a thorough checkup) was very knowledgable as well.

We have also had pretty good luck with DEK second hand.

Thanks for the comments everyone. EKRA might be nice but they don't seem to have any presence at all here in Australia?

DEKs do seem to be a very safe bet but they're just quite big. I made some queries on the nicer NeoHorizon models but unfortunately even secondhand they're well outside my budget.

2014 DEK Horizons move out of official support this year. This doesn't kill them but this is one reason DEKs about this age start to get fairly affordable, in the UK that makes them about 15-20K GBP, brand new after discounts etc a similar modern DEK would be £60-70K an MPM would be £150K and several next tier down brands would be £50K. DEKs are probably worth the money simply for the number of them out there to keep them going and going.

Now, that's very helpful information. What is it about the MPMs that they can justify such a price premium? I'd the build quality is anything like the UP2000 mechanically they last forever!

Hello, sir,

Have you ever investigated MPMsmarket price?

Could you please directly mail me your budget and about your details of needs?

That will be helpful to recommend you better.

Thanks.

I could be wrong but I think the UP2000 is larger than a typical DEK machine.

I haven't got numbers for older machines. But for recent models DEK is quite clearly bigger than either a Speedprint/Europlacer or an MPM100. Speedprint/Europlacer focuses on its smaller footprint as a selling point, although it looks to me like a Reprint Mantis is smaller again.

All printers seem to be built like tanks but the MPM seems to have another 100Kg+ on its rivals so maybe they really are extra tank like and that's part of the expense, the other being USA built equipment is terrible value outside the USA. Historially in the UK for instance, there have always been lots of MPM 2nd user printers around, I expect there to be far fewer over the next decade or so as the price stinks. For much the same reason we already don't really see UIC placement machines anymore. A random further fact, Chinese printers are often the heaviest of all. If you work with PCBs under 450mm long these can be the same money as a second user big name printer, or even less. If you really long board printers, big name brands can often actually be rebranded printers -sourced from you know where.

EKRA is sold by Machinery Forum in Australia. They might be able to source a second hand one for you?

Thanks. I wasn't familiar with Machinery Forum but regardless the EKRA machines are just not popular enough for me to consider.

Thanks mate, that's really interesting insight.

Despite the suggestions for other options shared here I have just purchased a Yamaha YCP10. Yes, it's a deep machine but the width is compact compared to the other options, so it should fit nicely in our location.

The Yamahas are quite popular here in Australia and as the YCP10 is still a current model it's very easy to get support/spares. I'm told on good authority that it's a superior machine to the Dek Horizons.

How much was that? My understanding of a Yamaha is they have a few tricks/features you don't often see on others and clearly targets the higher speed higher accuracy models of the original names in printing.

$23K USD for a very good condition, low hours 2016 model. Very similar to what I was being quoted for similar vintage Deks.
