Hi, We have a UP2000 with grid lok installed on it. We run several assemblies that have component pads close the edge of the board. The side clamps hold the stencil up off the board and we are either getting insufficients or excessive solder paste in those locations.

I am curious as to how others are dealing with this...aside from changing board designs.

This is something a DFM should catch.

Best Option: Add Break-Away rails to the board.

Worst Option: Buy a true on-contact printer... (normally referred to as the Y-Snugger option)

Shouldn't the top of the board be at the exact same height as the top of the side clamps? Why are the clamps holding the stencil up off the board?

What exactly do you mean by "side clamps"? If you mean the thin strips of metal that the board is pushed up against, they are adjustable. Maybe a little more squeege force or down stop also.

On the Ekra those are called top clamps AKA finger slicers. With the Ekra side clamping means there is nothing on the top of the board.

Does your printer have true side only clamping?

Or do you need the top finger slicers for the grid-lok to work right?

A sales guy brought us grid-lok demos I think three times. The first two times we didn't like it but when they made improvements the sales guy would bring the newest model in. I don't work there anymore and I"m pretty sure it was grid-lok, and I think the last ones didn't need the finger slicers to be used with the Ekra.

I would say that you either need to add rails or try to increase the squeegee pressure to hold down the stencil while it prints those close pads.

But...... Can you put PCB onto some type of carrier that would move these parts closer to center? Something like a piece of G10 or whatever with a hog out (recess) to allow PCB to sit flush in this? that would fix problemn for sure.

Turn off Grid-Lok, turn off side clamps. Use hand inserted tooling (yeah, you may have to do some thinking here)for support. If you have vacuum, turn it on.

People still use Grid-Lok?

Turning off the grid-lok is not an option. I have used the hand inserted tooling in the past..It takes too long to set up and it does not accomodate warped boards.

So I am I safe in saying that there is not much I can do aside from change my board designs ?

BTW....I am aware the side clamps are adjustable... This helps a little but not much. I have also played around with squeegee pressure and downstop settings..not much change there either.

Sounds like you need a support pallet to accommodate the narrow side clearance. Several pallet houses made pallets that work in screen printing that have flush board edge clamps that hold the board in the pallet yet allow the stencil to come all the way down flat. As far as Grid-loc goes, I've seen good demos and good salesmen, but marginal real-world results.

Do you still have the vacuum plates in? If so, you can set the grid-lok up in the "fixed mode" (not sure what they call it,where it won't set for each board), then you could run without side clamps and the Vacuum should be enough to keep it from moving. When I did it, I just used a flat plate to keep the board from bowing/moving and set the grid-lok until changeover.

Not as wack as Nancy Pelosi being Speaker of House. But back to the topic, Grid Lock kicks ass. You can even adjust the amount of force of the pushers that come up to the board. Your pads must be right on the edge. Might want to look into break-away's.

I agree,

There seems to be quite a bit of negative impression regarding Grid Lok. We have 4 DEK printers outfitted with them. We have had a few problems that were due to warped boards but other than that, they have worked well for us. Fixed tooling (specific to the board) is the best support option but we have about 500 different board types. This was the most flexible option for us.
