SMT of Flex circuits

I am interested in performing SMT Assembly on flex boards that would be a couple of inches wide but 2 to 5 feet long. Obviously quite a challenge. I would like to hear from anyone that may have seen anything similar done, or at least has an idea of how to do it.

I have customers populating LEDs on flex PCBs (with Aluminum support plates) with sizes up to 1,200mm (say 4ft) even on old Philips/Assembleon Topaz machines. What components are you planning to assemble on your flex PCBs?

Is printing your concern or placement. I would say both:

Printing: At 5 feet and on a flex you better have a really nice fixture to keep everything in check. You'll probably have to hand screen it unless your going to get a dedicated custom continuous printer, the largest off the shelf automated one I’ve seen can only do 36". If your only working on the two ends of the flex, like a flex to replace a cable, you might be able to either bend the middle out of the way making it shorter or do one end and then the other.

Placement is easier put one end it a pass through style machine place the left 24-36" rotate it put the other side in fist and place the right 24-36". If you have a table style (MYdata) hopefully you can either put it at an angle and make pray it fits or bend it where nothing is happening.

When I say bend I don’t mean form but just temporarily contour the flex to fit.
