feeder width

feeder width | 30 March, 1999

Hello,

I'm a student assistant in a research project that deals with the simulation of PCB assembly systems. At the moment I collect information about SMDs. My problem is how to assign the correct feeder width to various devices in a simulation. Is anybody able to help me ?

Thanks

Lars, I think I know what you are asking, devices = tape = feeder. IC's like the SOJ 26 usualy come in two tape widths 24X12mm and 32X16mm, TSOP 54, QFP100 etc are usualy 44X16 tape. The tape width defines what tape feeder you would use.Caps and resistor are almost all in the 8X4 format.

Hello Lars!

I'll give you what our machine feeders measure out to, I use Zevatech machines.

Tape feeders:

8mm taped components - Mostly passives, from 1005's up to 3216's, SOT's, and mini-melf components. The actual feeder width is 16mm.

12mm taped components - Tantalum C's and larger, the larger ceramic capacitors, larger MELF's, variable caps and resistors, GaAsFET's. The actual feeder width is 24mm.

16mm taped components - Aluminum Electrolytic caps, the smaller IC's SO8's, SO14's, SO16's. The actual feeder width is 32m.

24mm taped components - PLCC20/28's, SO20's

32mm taped components - PLCC32's,PLCC44's, PLCC sockets up to PLCC32 size, SOJ26 (DRAM), TSOP's, BGA (depending on size). The actual feeder width is 41mm.

44mm taped components - PLCC44 sockets, PLCC52's, PLCC68's, some SMT connectors, BGA (depending on size). The actual feeder width is 55mm.

Stick or tube feeders - I use just one size feeder, 44mm wide. I can configure them depending what I want to load. For instance; I can have 4 lanes that will load 4-different SO14's from one feeder, or I can have the feeder configured to load 2-different PLCC28's, or 1-PLCC68.

I hope this helps. Can I ask what your project is? Is it something to do with optimizing machine placement programs? Just curious is all...

Hi Lars! Steve seems to be right in assuming that your request is for optimization software ( I can read your homepage ). As I mentioned already in a prior thread, the most difficult part in the realization of an optimization software, I see in the differences of the machines in regards to axis speed and feeder width for example. In your case, I would go by the reel width of the tape you are using. 8 mm tape reels can be 15 mm wide. Add a spacing sheet metal and you get 16 mm like on the Zevatech. You are certainly aware of that the feeder space impacts the machine performance. The machine vendors know this as well and have "slim" feeders at least on the drawing board. However, I wish you the best in your project.| | Lars Jaeger |
