Hi all,

We recently purchased an Omniflow 10 and I am setting up some new recipes. I am told that you can crank the belt speed up pretty fast on this oven. The recipe I am working on now has a belt speed of 30 ipm. What should I have the belt speed at ?

Assuming you are processing the garden variety 63/37 paste on FR4 substrates, a good starting point is to plan for 3.5 to 4.5 minutes of process time on the board. If you measure the total heated length of your oven and you use the range above, you can calculate your belt speed range.

Remember, this is a starting point but should get you in the ballpark.

I have another question. I believe this machine was originally set up to run nitrogen. In the cooling section there are two chambers. One with a radiator air/nitrogen knives and the other section/chamber has a blower. Instead of running nitrogen to the knives I have shop air. My boards come out hot as hell. My question is: Is this oven able to run with the cooling sections configured the way they are without using nitrogen ? From looking at the manual I think that this oven is set up to use what Electrovert calls nitro cool. Which means that the oven uses cool nitrogen through the knife section to blow on the boards.

Anyone know about this ??

Oh, I see, concerning the fee. Sorry. Running NitroCool without N2 is possible, but cooling performance will be weak. You will want to get the higest flow out of the blowers. Try taking it all apart to remove bits that abstruct flow. Good luck.

I had an Omni10 that was set up for nitrogen, but also required a water chiller. Make sure your oven wasn't set up to be run with one. If, it was, I know a couple places that sell chillers which will meet the requirements.

Yes I have cleaned the nitrogen knives out, and I have a chiller hooked to the heat exchanger(radiator).I am starting to think that I need to replace the radiator with another blower...???

I have worked with Omniflo 7 and 10 ovens for many years. I purchased several 10 zone ovens in '98 when I worked for Ericsson. Here are some of my experinces with Electrovert Omniflo ovens; Yes, you can expect to run the conveyor speed a little faster with a longer oven. Verify with your KIC or ECD of course. I experimented with N2 vs. standard atmoshpere with many products and found that the cost of N2 and associated maintenance exceeded actual benefits for commercial applications. Nitro cool in a high volume application did not work out at Ericsson and I converted all machines to air cooled. Maintenance of a Nitro Cool system is high compared to an air cooled machine. I then went from Omniflo 7 ovens to Omniflo 10's to shave off reflow time. With the Electrovert air cooled ovens, I found that by specifying a 6", exit side, exhaust port, it performs better than the stock 4" diameter arrangement. The nitrogen oven is specified at 150cfm for both entrance and exit exhaust ports. The air cooled oven is 150cfm at the entrance and 300cfm at the exit exhaust. This bias towards the exit side of the oven helps to keep it clean even in a high volume environment. An Evert air cooled oven will out cool the Nitro Cool in my experience. All of the Electrovert ovens I have recently purchased (the latest for GE in 2000 and 2001) have this exhaust modification. I recommend that you consider converting your oven to air cooled! Dirk Ellis at Electrovert's Camdenton factory can assist you with getting this done.
