Investigation of PCB Failure after SMT Manufacturing Process

An ACI Technologies customer inquired regarding printed circuit board(PCB) failures that were becoming increasingly prevalent after the SMT (surface mount technology) manufacturing process. The failures were detected by electrical testing, but were undetermined as to the location and specific devices causing the failures. The failures were suspected to be caused predominately in the BGA (ball grid array) devices located on specific sites on this 16 layer construction. Information that was provided on the nature of the failures (i.e., opens or shorts) included high resistance shorts that were occurring in those specified areas. The surface finish was a eutectic HASL (hot air solder leveling) and the solder paste used was a water soluble Sn/Pb(tin/lead).

Latent short circuit failure in high-rel PCBs caused by lack of cleanliness of PCB processes and base materials

Latent short circuit failures have been observed during testing of Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) for power distribution of spacecraft of the European Space Agency. Root cause analysis indicates that foreign fibers may have contaminated the PCB laminate. These fibers can provide a pathway for electromigration if they bridge the clearance between nets of different potential in the presence of humidity attracted by the hygroscopic laminate resin. No-fault-found and intermittent failures in electronic products

This paper reviews the possible causes and effects for no-fault-found observations and intermittent fail- ures in electronic products and summarizes them into cause and effect diagrams. Several types of inter- mittent hardware failures of electronic assemblies are investigated, and their characteristics and mechanisms are explored. One solder joint intermittent failure case study is presented. The paper then discusses when no-fault-found observations should be considered as failures. Guidelines for assessment of intermittent failures are then provided in the discussion and conclusions.

Latent heat induced deformation of PCB substrate: Measurement and simulation

The work evaluates the impact of latent heat (LH) absorbed or released by a solder alloy during melting or solidification, respectively, on changes of dimensions of materials surrounding of the solder alloy. Our sample comprises a small printed circuit board (PCB) with a blind via filled with lead-free alloy SAC305. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was employed to obtain the amount of LH per mass and a thermomechanical analyzer was used to measure the thermally induced deformation. A plateau during melting and a peak during solidification were detected during the course of dimension change. The peak height reached 1.6 um in the place of the heat source and 0.3 um in the distance of 3 mm from the source. The data measured during solidification was compared to a numerical model based on the finite element method. An excellent quantitative agreement was observed which confirms that the transient expansion of PCB during cooling can be explained by the release of LH from the solder alloy during solidification. Our results have important implications for the design of PCB assemblies where the contribution of recalescence to thermal stress can lead to solder joint failure.

SMT Stencils - Grounding Stencils to the Frame across the Mesh - Anyone ever heard of this? -- Has anyone ever heard of a standard 29"x29" space saver SMT stencil being considered and ESD risk because of the mesh, or having a requirement to ground the frame to the stencil?

Routing through sections with copper traces -- Does anyone have experience with routing through areas of PCBs with Cu traces running through them. Trying concept to design in functional "wing" portions to our main board in an effort to get 2 in 1 functional boards - a fully functional main PCB and the main PCB with wing for added functionality/analysis. We would cut off "wing" on boards where we want only the main board for product assembly. Initial effort was successful, but we did add a band of resistors to DNP in order to cut off signals through the traces in the routed section. Cross sectional view of cut looked good, no obvious "smearing" of copper which would result in shorts. Team now wants to do the same approach, but without the band of resistors that essentially cut off the routed traced from the main board so we would be routing through lines still fully connected to main PCB when cutting off wing section.

SMT Nozzles catalog -- Hi everyone. I have little problem finding the right SMT nozzle for my new custom machine . For manipulating custom component with dimensions close to passive element 0402 . Now in machine i've put a siemens SMT Nozzle . But there are some problems with her . There is not enough flatness of the nozzle . So I'm looking for other one nozzle . But I can't find catalog with some dimensions and type of head for these nozzles .In atachement you can see the nozzle that I want to use . three holes with ceramic coating . I'm looking for Universal Instruments . this nozzle is from Universal instruments for 0402 dimension .I need to know dimensions of the head for these nozzle to I have the part number but no dimensions - part number must be 51305433 And as i write the dimension of nozzle . Some more detailed catalog. Thanks in advance !
