Failure Analysis - Using Ion Chromatography And Ion Chromatography/Mass Spec (IC/MS)

Since the 1980s the electronics industry has utilized ion chromatography (IC) analysis to understand the relationship of ions, and some organics, to product reliability. From component and board fabrication to complete electronic assemblies and their end-use environment, IC analysis has been the de facto method for evaluating ionic cleanliness of electronic hardware.

Divergence in Test Results Using IPC Standard SIR and Ionic Contamination Measurements

Controlled humidity and temperature controlled surface insulation resistance (SIR) measurements of flux covered test vehicles, subject to a direct current (D.C.) bias voltage are recognized by a number of global standards organizations as the preferred method to determine if no clean solder paste and wave soldering flux residues are suitable for reliable electronic assemblies. The IPC, Japanese Industry Standard (JIS), Deutsches Institut fur Normung (DIN) and International Electrical Commission (IEC) all have industry reviewed standards using similar variations of this measurement. This study will compare the results from testing two solder pastes using the IPC-J-STD-004B, IPC TM-650 2.6.3.7 surface insulation resistance test, and IPC TM-650 2.3.25 in an attempt to investigate the correlation of ROSE methods as predictors of electronic assembly electrical reliability.

Identifying Flux Residues

Why identify flux residues? The primary purpose of flux is to reduce species of metal oxides from solderable surfaces, and to act as a mechanism for lifting and removing debris. If the assembly is not properly cleaned after manufacturing, flux may continue to reduce metals and may eventually corrode the assembly. When the assembly is powered, the metal ions may precipitate along electromagnetic field lines and form dendritic shorts. In addition, the presence of residue can alter the insulation properties of a board, affect the adhesion of the conformal coating, or interfere with the moving parts of the assembly. In radio frequency (RF) applications, flux may change the RF properties on the surface of the printed circuit board (PCB) such as the dielectric strength, surface resistance, and Q-resonance.

Comparison of ROSE, C3/IC, and SIR as an effective cleanliness verification test for post soldered PCBA

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness and sensitivity of different cleanliness verification tests for post soldered printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) to provide an understanding of current industry practice for ionic contamination detection limits.

Design/methodology/approach: PCBAs were subjected to different flux residue cleaning dwell times and cleanliness levels were verified with resistivity of solvent extract, critical cleanliness control test, and ion chromatography analyses to provide results capable of differentiating different sensitivity levels for each test.

Findings: This study provides an understanding of current industry practice for ionic contamination detection using verification tests with different detection sensitivity levels. Some of the available cleanliness monitoring systems, particularly at critical areas of circuitry that are prone to product failure and residue entrapment, may have been overlooked.

Research limitations/implications: Only Sn/Pb, clean type flux residue was evaluated. Thus, the current study was not an all encompassing project that is representative of other chemistry-based flux residues.

Practical implications: The paper provides a reference that can be used to determine the most suitable and effective verification test for the detection of ionic contamination on PCBAs.

Originality/value: Flux residue-related problems have long existed in the industry. The findings presented in this paper give a basic understanding to PCBA manufacturers when they are trying to choose the most suitable and effective verification test for the detection of ionic contamination on their products. Hence, the negative impact of flux residue on the respective product's long-term reliability and performance can be minimized and monitored effectively.

PWB Contamination & Reliability DOE

This report hopes to achieve several goals:

1. Determine the link between bare PWB contamination, soldered assembly contamination and long-term product reliability.

2. Establish measurable limits for bare PWB cleanliness as well as process control limits for both an aqueous as well as a water-soluble soldering process.

3. Determine whether there is any correlation between common, industry-accepted rose/modified rose (omegameter/ionograph type) testing and long term product reliability.

4. Determine the effect PWB plating finish (HASL, Immersion Silver and Cu OSP) has on both bare PWB contamination as well as soldered assembly in a no clean and water soluble process. 2

5. Determine whether there is a link between percentage of saponifier used to wash soldered assemblies and long-term reliability.

6. Establish a more cost-effective test for manufacturers to use as a process-monitoring tool.

Dedicated stencil printer tooling -- I'm looking to make dedicated tooling for my mpm stencil printer. We only make 3 different boards and they are the same size panel so I'm planning to make one bit of tooling for them. One board is 0.6 mm and sometimes I have problems with it not being clamped perfectly then sticking to the stencil when it's meant to an snap off. Has anyone got advice for making dedicated tooling? I'm planning to machine it from aluminum. Should I use any form of gasket? Should I gasket off PTH? Anyone got photos of something that works well for them?

Part Marking search site -- Occasionally we need to verify that the part in my hand is the MPN it is supposed to be. Or I need to figure out what a part is because the part number label is damaged. I had been using smdmark (dot) com with some success, but it appears to be down. It's also not the greatest. Is there a better site to use? Also, I do not understand the manufacturers that mark their ICs, yet the datasheets have zero information on what the PART MARKING should be. Marking the part does no good if the Datasheet doesn't confirm the marking. Whenever AOI encounters a different marking than what is saved in the system, I essentially have to "prove" it's the valid part. 90% of the information on those datasheets matters to 1% of the people involved with the product. Yet the information that 90% of the people would find useful, is either well hidden, or not included. I really wish there was a standard format like MSDS sheets. *rant over*
