An Investigation into Alternative Methods of Drying Moisture Sensitive Devices

The use of desiccant bags filled with Silica Sand and or Clay beads used in conjunction with a Moisture Barrier Bag to control moisture for storage of printed circuit boards has long been an accepted practice and standard from both JEDEC and IPC organizations. Additionally, the use heated ovens for baking off moisture using the evaporation process has also been a long-standing practice from these organizations. This paper on alternative drying methods will be accompanied by completed independent, unbiased tests conducted by Vinny Nguyen, an engineering student (now graduated) from San Jose State University. The accompanied paper will examine the performance levels of different technologies of desiccant bags to control moisture in enclosed spaces. The tests and equipment set were reviewed by an engineer and consultant to the Lockheed Martin Aerospace Division and the IPC - TM-650 2.6.28 test method was review by engineer from pSemi. The tests were designed to mimic performance tests outlined in Mil Spec 3464, which both IPC and JEDEC have adopted for their respective standards. The test examined variables including absorption capacity rates, weight gain and release of moisture back into the enclosed area.

Handling of Highly-Moisture Sensitive Components - An Analysis of Low-Humidity Containment and Baking Schedules

Unique component handling issues can arise when an assembly factory uses highly-moisture sensitive surface mount devices (SMDs). This work describes how the distribution of moisture within the molded plastic body of a SMD is an important variable for survivability. JEDEC/IPC [1] moisture level rated packages classified as Levels 4-5a are shown to require additional handling constraints beyond the typical out-of-bag exposure time tracking. Nitrogen or desiccated cabinet containment is shown as a safe and effective means for long-term storage provided the effects of prior out-of-bag exposure conditions are taken into account. Moisture diffusion analyses coupled with experimental verification studies show that time in storage is as important a variable as floor-life exposure for highly-moisture sensitive devices. Improvements in floor-life survivability can be obtained by a handling procedure that includes cyclic storage in low humidity containment. SMDs that have exceeded their floor-life limits are analyzed for proper baking schedules. Optimized baking schedules can be adopted depending on a knowledge of the exposure conditions and the moisture sensitivity level of the device.

Methods: • Drying in convection and/ or vacuum oven • Parameters subject to material type, soldering surface, layer count, time to soldering, layout (copper-plated areas)

Moisture-Sensitive Components

The topic of moisture-sensitive components is rather boring but very important -- and frequently misunderstood. Increased moisture-sensitive component use, such as thin fine-pitch devices and ball grid arrays (BGA), has increased concern for this failure mechanism. When components are exposed to the elevated temperatures that occur during reflow soldering, moisture trapped inside plastic surface mount devices (SMD) produces enough vapor pressure to damage or destroy the device. Common failure modes include internal separation (delamination) of the plastic from the die or lead-frame; wire bond damage; die damage; and internal cracks that do not extend to the component surface. In extreme cases, cracks will extend to the component surface; in the most severe cases, the component will bulge and pop (referred to as the "popcorn" effect).

ESD Surface Resistivity Meters Voltage settings -- I have a ESD Surface Resistivity Meters and while trying to measure table to ground it wants us to set a voltage value as 10V, 100V, 500V. I'm not sure which one should i choose? What are them for?

Stencils with two PCB layouts -- I am curious if there is any benefit to using two different PCB paste layouts on one stencil. If I have a small PCB with a layout that doesn't take up much space on the stencil, would it be worth it to have both the secondary and primary side apertures on the same stencil? If the primary and secondary apertures are spaced far enough, you could potentially have have the squeegee stop before it pastes over the layout that is currently not in use. I'm relatively new to the industry so I'm not an expert on this stuff, but my company always buys two stencils for both sides of the PCB. I know stencils aren't that expensive but maybe someone has tried this before and deemed it a bad/good idea.
