How to Profile a PCB.

An optimal reflow profile is one of the most critical factors in achieving quality solder joints on a printed circuit board (PCB) assembly with surface mount components. A profile is a function of temperatures applied to the assembly over time. When graphed on a Cartesian plane, a curve is formed that represents the temperature at a specific point on the PCB, at any given time, throughout the reflow process.

Reflow profile has significant impact on solder joint performance because it influences wetting and microstructure of the solder joint. The degree of wetting, the microstructure (in particular the intermetallic layer), and the inherent strength of the solder all factor into the reliability of the solder joint. Reflow Experiment

An experiment was recently performed ACI Technologies for a customer that was interested in comparing the wetting of lead-free solders with varying temperature profiles and atmospheric conditions. In order to deliver an objective measurement of solder wetting (in addition to subjective inspection analysis), a simple wetting indicator pattern was added to the solder stencil in an area on the test vehicle that had exposed and unused copper.

Datapaq 2000 Data Cable -- We purchased a datapaq 2000 reflow tracker which is roughly 1991-1995 vintage. The LED's on it seem to indicate it is working and I was able to get the software installed on a PC, but it doesn't have a data cable. It has a 3.5mm TRS port on it for COMMS which connects via cable to a RS-232 port on the PC. I tried making a cable with the few iterations that are possible with tx, rx and gnd but I was not able to connect to the logger with the software. Does anyone know if the logger is a straight RS-232 cable connection or is it converted to RS-485 in the cable? I have been unable to track down a cable for the unit unfortunately. These are expensive so I was hoping to get this old dog working to save us some coin.

Universal feeders mounted then unmounted -- We're having an issue with a few Universal electronic feeders. They are just 12mm white label electric feeders. When loaded into a slot on a machine, the machine reports the feeder being mounted and then seconds later reports it is unmounted. The issue follows the feeder on multiple machines. Has anyone seen this before and any thoughts on what we should look at? We checked the pogo pins and they are all moving freely. Thanks
