White residue after cleaning with IPA

Electronics Forum | Sun Jan 26 09:32:55 EST 2003 | davef

But soon after cleaning and drying with IPA, we find a white residue formation. A: IPA will not nothing to clean your board. The white residue is exactly what you should expect. Search the fine SMTnet Archives for background. >How do we avoid th

Micro BGA coplanarity

Electronics Forum | Fri Mar 21 08:56:29 EST 2003 | russ

Is it possible that the flux you used, if applied in excess could have caused the balls to "blow out". I have seen this in the past and it was related to the type of flux we were using and the amount. Russ

Micro BGA coplanarity

Electronics Forum | Sat Mar 22 01:05:47 EST 2003 | bcceng

I agree with Russ, seen this happen if the right amount of paste flux is not applied. You mite want to dip the spheres of the BGA to the layer of paste flux.

Whitish Solder Joint

Electronics Forum | Fri Apr 04 10:02:20 EST 2003 | rdr

Do you reflow both sides of the boards before washing? Sometimes these white residues occur from "burnt" flux. we see this from time to time especially when using hot air and liquid flux. Russ

Tombstone defect

Electronics Forum | Mon May 19 02:36:25 EDT 2003 | Thomas

Hi Grant, From what I know, it has something to do with the flux...Imagine if the temp difference of the flux is somehow slowed down..it would reduce the tendency of a stronger pull on one side of the pad...

Pinhole Solder Joint Reliability

Electronics Forum | Mon Jul 21 21:59:08 EDT 2003 | davef

Theory #6 [maybe 3a?]: If you change your paste to a 'non-voiding' paste, your problem will go away. It's the flux in your paste that's killing you. The flux gets trapped in the solder and then releases ejacta that form the volcanic openings in you

Automatic Titration

Electronics Forum | Thu Sep 25 12:27:23 EDT 2003 | John S

Is anyone using an automatic titrator to monitor their flux? If so, can you recommend a product? Is it reliable and easy to use? We are using a VOC free no-clean flux and are titrating manually. Thanks John S

FLux, PBGA & Lead Free

Electronics Forum | Fri Oct 24 17:04:43 EDT 2003 | Joe

Any information on the difference in a thermal profile between lead free and regular Lead profile? Also, why use flux with Lead? Why not with Lead Free? Thanks, Joe

Specific Gravity

No don't know about such a chart. But, consider changing the method used to check flux activity. Consult your flux supplier for a test kit that will measure actual activity (acidity). SG is a suggestive method.

Can anyone provide a list of the top 5 solder paste / wave flux manufacturers by sales? We are evaluating changing to a new chemistry and would like evaluate several of the top manufacturers. Thanks.
