Hyundai Solidifies Entrenched Presence in Global Mobile Phone Market With New 8Mb Super Low-Power SRAM

Mar 26, 2001

Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. (HEI) today announced the introduction of its 8Mb super low-power static random access memory (SRAM) product family, targeted for use in next-generation mobile handset and wireless communication devices. Manufactured using leading-edge, 0.18-micron process and chip scale package technologies, the new SRAM family addition solidifies Hyundai's entrenched presence in this market. Additionally, this product family positions the company to take advantage of surging demand for low-voltage SRAM for mobile phone applications, predicted by market research firm, Dataquest, to increase from 520 million units in 2001 to one billion units in 2004.

Commenting on Hyundai's prime position as one of the top three producers of SRAM devices for mobile phone applications, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Hyundai Electronics America, Gary Swanson, credited the company's commitment to meeting the most stringent technical demands of high-density, ultra-compact mobile phones. "We place a high premium on supplying state-of-the-art SRAM technology to our top-tier communications customers, and our new 8Mb device is just the latest indication of this commitment. We expect to continue our dominance of this fertile market segment with our innovative research and development efforts and ongoing delivery of world-class customer service."

With sales revenue of more than $490 million in 2000, primarily in the mobile phone niche market, Hyundai's SRAM unit has quickly grown to represent 7 percent of Hyundai Electronics' total revenue. Investments made in 1999 to reinforce its SRAM business have positioned Hyundai to meet the increasing requirements for 8Mb SRAM in various Asian and Latin American markets. With the introduction of Internet applications for mobile phones that deliver high-speed multimedia data, as well as Web browsing services, such as i-Mode and IMT-2000, the 8Mb device is expected to dominate the SRAM mobile applications market for the next two-to-three years.

The new 8Mb device is available at 1.8, 2.5, and 3.0 volts, with a stand-by level of less than ten microamperes (uA). Production will occur at Hyundai's state-of-the-art Korean fab facilities, where the existing DRAM fab infrastructure is slightly adjusted to manufacture SRAM products-keeping production costs low and creating flexible capacity to accommodate orders on demand.

Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. (HEI) of Ichon, Korea, is an industry leader in the development, sales, marketing, and distribution of high-quality semiconductors (including DRAM, SRAM, Flash memory and system IC devices), telecommunications, and liquid crystal displays. The Semiconductor Group of Hyundai Electronics is the world's largest DRAM supplier with 11 semiconductor manufacturing facilities worldwide, and production capacity of over 300,000 wafer starts per month. In addition, Hyundai is expanding its system IC business unit with leading technology and added deep-submicron foundry services to strategically broaden its overall semiconductor presence and achieve its goal of leading the global semiconductor market. Based in Korea, HEI maintains development, manufacturing, sales and marketing facilities strategically located worldwide.
